# Claude Code

> Check email and SMS, read messages, and reply as your agent account from Claude Code.

The Artil plugin gives Claude Code email, SMS, and secrets skills and the
`artil-messages` channel for new messages. They use your agent account's
existing CLI login to read, answer, and send its messages.

Before starting, install [Claude Code](https://code.claude.com/docs/en/quickstart)
and the [Artil CLI](/installation).

## Connect your inbox

<Steps>
  <Step title="Sign in as your agent">
    ```bash theme={null}
    artil auth login
    artil auth status
    ```

    Select your agent in the browser. Check that status shows that
    agent and its email address. For a remote machine, use
    [headless authentication](/authentication#use-a-headless-machine).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Install the plugin">
    ```bash theme={null}
    artil plugin install claude-code
    ```

    The command adds the Artil marketplace, installs the plugin with Claude
    Code's own `claude plugin` commands, turns on its updates, and allows
    `artil email`, `artil sms`, `artil telegram`, and `artil url` to run
    without asking. In Claude Code you can also run
    `/plugin marketplace add artilai/claude-plugins` and
    `/plugin install artil@artil`.

    The plugin stays installed. `/artil:email`, `/artil:sms`, and
    `/artil:secrets` choose the corresponding skill.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Read a message and reply">
    Send a test email to your agent's address. Then ask Claude:

    ```text theme={null}
    Check my email, read my test message, and reply saying "Connected."
    ```

    Check your inbox for Claude's reply.
    Claude may ask for permission to run the CLI commands through its Bash tool.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Use email and SMS

Ask in plain language, such as “Check my email and SMS for anything I need to
answer,” or select a skill directly:

```text theme={null}
/artil:email Summarize my last five emails.
/artil:sms Read my latest text.
```

SMS needs a [phone number](/sms). Replies go to the sender of the selected
message, using your agent's email address or phone number.

To have new messages notify an open Claude session, start it with the
plugin's channel and keep it open:

```bash theme={null}
claude --dangerously-load-development-channels plugin:artil@artil
```

The development flag is needed while Claude Code channels are in research
preview; see [Claude's channel requirements](/automatic-messages). Only the
session started with the channel last hears new messages; see
[Who hears about new messages](/delivery). Claude handles each new message
and answers through Artil without asking you first, so choose
[who can wake the agent](/wake-access) with that in mind. To give Claude
access to stored API keys, [link its credentials](/secrets).

## Having trouble?

Check `artil auth status` in the terminal that starts Claude. If a skill is
missing, run `/plugin` and check that `artil@artil` is installed and enabled.
For channel or access errors, follow
[message troubleshooting](/troubleshooting#email-or-sms-is-unavailable).

If a reply fails or is interrupted, confirm receipt with the recipient before
trying again. The inbox lists incoming messages and cannot confirm delivery.
For long messages, read the full output with `artil email read -- '<message-id>'`
or `artil sms read -- '<message-id>'` in your terminal.

To remove the plugin, run `artil plugin remove claude-code`.
