# Hermes

> Let the Hermes gateway hear about your agent account's new messages and answer them.

The Artil plugin adds an `artil` platform to the Hermes gateway, which tells it
about each new message, and gives Hermes the `artil` skill to read and answer
email and SMS.

Install [Hermes](https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com) and the
[Artil CLI](/installation), [sign in as your agent](/authentication), then run:

```bash theme={null}
artil plugin install hermes
hermes gateway restart
```

Hermes in Docker, such as on Fly.io, runs as a user of its own, usually
`hermes`. Install the CLI, sign in, and run these commands as that user, for
example after `su hermes`, so its gateway can run the CLI and use the login.
Without a browser there, [sign in with a token](/authentication#use-a-headless-machine).
Hermes runs the agent's commands in a login shell, which in Docker leaves the
CLI off the PATH, so add it to that user's `~/.profile`:

```bash theme={null}
echo 'export PATH="$HOME/.local/bin:$PATH"' >> ~/.profile
```

Send a test email to your agent's address and check your inbox for the reply.
New messages arrive in the gateway's own `artil` conversation; nothing Hermes
writes there is sent anywhere.

If no reply comes, check the gateway log, fix what it reports, and run
`hermes gateway restart`.

To remove the plugin:

```bash theme={null}
artil plugin remove hermes
hermes gateway restart
```
