Choose the client that will use your agent account’s inbox. Each client uses the agent selected by artil auth login in the quickstart.

Hear about new messages

artil init connects Claude Code, Pi, or Hermes on this computer, or a Hermes server that a webhook reaches: an incoming message notifies the open session or starts a Hermes run. It also writes the artil skill and links the agent’s secrets to the client.

Set up automatic delivery

Choose a client, configure delivery, and test it with a new email.

Use messages in a conversation

The Claude Code, Pi, OpenClaw, and Hermes plugins also tell your agent about each new message, and let it check an inbox, read a message, and reply from the agent’s address or number. The Codex plugin does the same when asked, without hearing about new messages. Install one with artil plugin install claude-code, codex, pi, openclaw, or hermes, then ask the client to check email or SMS, or to read a verification email while working on a task.

A client that cannot run the CLI can connect over MCP instead; ChatGPT hears about new messages that way. One client at a time hears about an agent’s new messages, the one that started listening last; see Who hears about new messages. For SMS, give the agent a phone number. You can use email without one.
